Ski and Snowboard Tuning and Repair

Why is it important for you to make sure that your equipment is in good conditions ? The answer is quite simple - because you'll have much more fun on the slopes afterwards.

It's easy to explain why.

Professional edge grinding ensures uncompromising grip even in icy slope conditions. This saves energy and increases safety and results with less energy needed and lower risk of accidents. Optimum structured base ensures the perfect "turning moment" and smooth easy gliding in all snow conditions. Together they create a feeling on the slopes which you'll never want to be without again!

First of all, have a look on the base of your favourite toy or let one of our experts have a look to provide you the appropriate repair. Here are exemples of what the issues you can have :

Dull, rounded edges or damage such as nicks or burrs. If your edges are worn your ski/board will want to continually slip out from under you while making turns, Dull edges will no longer grip the snow helping you carve your turns.Worn edges can be particularly hard to ski/ride on firm or icy snow conditions. Using our side edge tools combined with either diamond stones or files, you can quickly bring back that new ski feel with a few simple steps. The base edge can only be sharpened at OnTheMountain, any work you do at home to the base edge will only increase the base edge bevel.

When inspecting your equipment also look for damage to the base such as scratches or deep gouges. Even small scratches can impede glide and can lead to more damage if not repaired. Deep gouges, which penetrate to the core, or run along the steel edges need to be repaired by a qualified repair shop like OnTheMountain.

As you ski/ride the wax wears from the base due to friction and will leave it with a dry, fuzzy, gray appearance. By applying a fresh coat of wax you will refresh the base and improve the glide while conditioning it against oxidation. The wax will wear quickly, especially on dry snow and should be re-applied after every 2 to 4 days of use. When you take your equipment in to OnTheMountain repair shop we will apply wax as part of the repair service.

What we are going to do

1. Inspection

The top, base and edges are wiped clean of any dirt, solvents, and excess wax.
Then the ski / board is inspected for any damage.

2. Base repair

Any nicks, gouges, or core shots are repaired and filled with base repair material.

3. Base grinding

The ski/board is then run across the stone grinder removing any minor damage and making the base flat and true. In doing so, tiny cuts are ground off and the base becomes true and flat. Now the base is able to absorb wax and the structures created are an important aid in gliding. This new structure also helps prevent suction and friction between base and snow. Your ski / board glides better and accomplishes the transition from edge to edge more easily. In addition, different temperatures and snow conditions require different structures - only the technician knows the right formula.

4. Edge grinding

Most ski and board edges are "bevelled" between 0 and 2 degrees: a continuous smooth surface is created. Our machines are able to reproduce this exact edge for ultimate carving performance on the hill.

5. Waxing

The last step in tuning is hot waxing. Hot wax impregnates the base, protects against damage and improves the gliding and turning properties of skis and boards.

6. Binding adjustment

Your binding has to hold when it should, and it has to release when it must. An individually adjusted binding brings peace of mind that your bindings are adjusted correctly so you can enjoy your day on the hill.

When to do it

1. Prior to the first outing in winter

2. About every 4 days out on the slopes

3. And at the end of the season
